L’Acadie Vineyards was established in 2005 with our first plantings and then our much anticipated first releases in 2008.  The name L’Acadie was chosen after the rich farming history of our area.  The original name Acadie is credited to Italian explorer Verrazzano, who in the services of the French crown in the 1500’s, named all lands north of Virginia including the Atlantic provinces Arcadia, after the Arcadia district in Greece meaning refuge or idyllic place.  On later maps the “r” was dropped.

Our vineyard and winery have been certified organic since inception by Pro Cert Organics. Our practices in the vineyard and winery follow the stringent Canadian Organic Standard and Pro Cert regularly inspects our records and practices to ensure adherence. The winery has the distinction of becoming the first winery in Nova Scotia to be certified organic

Organic practices in the winery include minimal use of sulfites. These are naturally produced by winemaking yeast usually in sufficient amounts for quality sparkling wine production.  The limits of sulfite levels in the Canadian Organic Standard are half of conventional wines. There are no GMO(genetically modified organisms) products allowed in organic wines.  Our sparkling wines are additionally appropriate for vegan diets.

Environmental initiatives in the winery are a geothermal heat pump for heating, cooling and hot water, building construction with sustainable material such as wooden timber frames, cedar exterior doors and concrete insulated walls, and infrared reflecting roof.   The winery is built into the slope of our land to take advantage of natural earth insulation keeping our tirage cellar at a constant temperature for optimum aging of our sparkling wines.
